Sand, sand, same, same

SIYUAN CHEN

Siyuan Chen is a multidisciplinary artist currently based between China and the United Kingdom. Working across installation, performance, moving image and sound, his practice investigates the fragility of contemporary relationships and the shifting nature of communication in digital society. Through material experimentation and spatial interventions, Chen explores how emotional connections are formed, disrupted and transformed through systems of mediation, repetition and distance.

My practice explores the fragility of human relationships in contemporary society. Drawing on installation, performance, moving image and sound, I investigate moments where connection becomes unstable, communication falters, and meaning begins to dissolve.

Recent works focus on the affective conditions produced by digital communication and data-driven forms of interaction. Rather than representing technology directly, I am interested in how emotional experiences emerge through processes of repetition, delay, feedback and distortion. Materials such as fabric, sand, light, mirrors and sound function as carriers of vulnerability, revealing the tensions between proximity and distance, contact and separation.

Through these spatial and performative encounters, I seek to create situations in which relationships appear not as fixed structures but as temporary, fragile states that are continuously forming and unravelling.
