Leyan Gao’s creative practice closely connects the process of emotional change with the process of making, using personal experiences and shifting emotions as the starting point for her work. The final outcome functions both as a visual record of her emotional journey and as a medium through which viewers can engage in emotional and psychological dialogue.

Working across mixed media, performance, photography, and moving image, she continuously explores questions of selfhood, identity, and consciousness. Her works often exist in a state of openness and ambiguity, revealing seemingly contradictory dualities, the uncertainties of transformation, and the complex psychological experiences of individuals within contemporary social structures.
