Eimhear Atkinson

Eimhear Atkinson is an artist from the North of Ireland working across painting and sculpture. Her practice is grounded in material-led processes and an ongoing interest in transformation, instability, and the shifting conditions of everyday experience. Working in a way that is both attentive and playful, she considers how objects might operate as containers for gesture, tension, and meaning, particularly through ideas of staging, theatre, and spatial construction. Her work reflects on how environments are structured and experienced, often attending to the subtle thresholds between interior and exterior, and the ways in which these distinctions shape perception and behaviour. Rather than resolving into fixed forms or readings, her works are developed as spatial propositions, where material, form, and arrangement actively influence how a space is encountered and navigated. Atkinson is interested in the relationship between object and environment as something constructed and contingent, using making as a way to test how presence and atmosphere are produced. A playful sensibility underpins her practice, where making is a form of inquiry, alongside a restrained humour that emerges through material associations and the slight misalignments between intention and outcome.

Eimhear Atkinson’s practice approaches making as a form of inquiry, unfolding through a self-reflective consideration of stability and instability, and one’s position within shifting conditions. The works on display extend this thinking through painting and sculpture, where material is tested as both structure and event, and the boundaries between object, image, and space which hang in a sense of abstraction.
Influenced by ideas of theatre and staging, the exhibition considers how artworks operate as spatial propositions that shape and are shaped by their environment. Painting and sculpture are brought into close proximity, allowing material conditions to register across surface and form, and positioning the exhibition space as an active component of the work.
Atkinson treats the art object as a container for process and interaction, generating situations in which real and imagined elements coexist across multiple registers. Drawing loosely on memory and the shifting logic of everyday experience, the works remain unsettled, resisting fixed resolution.
A sense of play underpins the practice, where making becomes exploratory and responsive. This is articulated through a negotiation between instruction and intuition, within both the process of painting and the broader structures that shape routine and lived experience.
