Caroline Douglas

b. 1984

Caroline Douglas works predominantly with photography. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2006. In 2008, Caroline was Re:Create Artist in Residence at Stills Gallery in Edinburgh. This autumn Caroline was artist in residence with the Photography Department at the School of the Art Institute Chicago.

Statement

“Since the late 1970s written representations have been removed from the domain of the pornographic. In 1979 the report of the Williams Committee recommended that the purely written word should be completely exempt from any censorship or legal control related to its supposed obscene character.”

A large concentration of my practice is concerned with exploring themes of refuge and prospect, safety and intimacy, public and private and permission and refusal. Essentially my work is an exploration of the relationship between photography and seeing. My recent practice has undertaken a critical engagement in voyeurism and the projection of fantasies.
