William Armstrong

William Armstrong was born in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. He can often be found taking lengthy walks through the city. Prior to coming to Glasgow for the Master of Fine Art Course, he received a Visual Art Diploma from Red Deer Polytechnic and a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Alberta University of the Arts.

Artist Statement

Drawing from his experience growing up in car-dependent North American cities, William Armstrong investigates the role of the pedestrian in environments designed for the vehicle. In his practice, he explores the impact of distance by undertaking lengthy walks to the edgelands, from retail establishments and motorways, to wastelands and car parks. Using objects and imagery collected along the way, his work reflects the collisions produced by the interactions between people and the environments around them.
