Julita Hanlon

Julita Hanlon, born in 1969 in Poland, now lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland.

In 2021 she received BA (Honours) Fine Art: Painting and Printmaking from Glasgow School of Art.

Since 2019 she participated in group exhibitions in Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness, and in 2021 was selected for the SaltSpace Balancing Art collaborative residency in Glasgow. Her newest works were shown in The Tales of Others (Glasgow, 2025) exhibition.

‘Faceless Decision Makers’ and ‘Borders’ series featured in Home (Glasgow, 2024) and Unfinished Movement (Dundee, 2022). ‘Fragments’ series was included in the Control Alter Delete (Glasgow, 2021) and TrêsTrzy3 (Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness, 2019).

In 2023 she supported Migrant Voice in co-curating Putting Ourselves in The Pictures exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Galleries and Museum, Glasgow, and continues to contribute her works to their exhibitions and publications. Her short story was included in the ‘All Roads Lead to Glasgow’ book.

She is a founding member, and a Chair of a Glasgow based Threading Stories Collective.

"I am a Polish-born and Glasgow-based multi-disciplinary artist. My practice, in part autobiographical, responds to current affairs and centres around the themes of migration, injustice, and prejudice.

The current body of work, inspired by writings of Jacques Derrida and Franz Kafka and real-life experiences, investigates the complex ideas of home, migration, and macro-hospitality.

My installations foreground the impermanence of home and investigate the what language means within a wider context of a mutual understanding.

I exploit the capacity of the materials and their processes to generate symbolic meanings that can support my visual language. For example, combining the softness and pliability of fibre and the harshness of metal allows me to create works that stand as metaphors for the journey and transformation, and the use of embroidery and poetry brings a personal dimension to my work.
