Christian Noelle Charles

Christian Noelle Charles is a Black Female Artist who describes herself as a giddy girl in the world. A Syracuse, New York native, Christian’s work is an exploration of female representation and self-love in a contemporary world.

Christian takes inspiration from today’s pop culture, modern performance techniques, and personal experiences. She also derives inspiration as a performance artist from the relationship between performer and audience member. By using the mediums of printmaking, video, and performance her work demonstrates a celebration of self-love and individuality.

b. Year of the Rooster, New York.

Statement

Growing up in the dance world, it was necessary for me to be aware of my body. However, having always been a black woman in dance, I had to develop a double awareness. The work--which centres around black female identities, bodies, body language and self worth-- is informed by this double awareness. I use the influence of modern pop culture to create art that considers and questions what it means to be a woman of color in the world.

Mindful of the impact of politics at this moment and moving forward, I wish to consciously observe how place and the current zeitgeist will constitute my own identity and black female identities. In the aftermath of Brexit and the emerging age of Trump, I am interested in how my personal observations will influence my work. The whole idea of narcissism has had many meanings and connotations however, in this era especially, I believe that those meanings have expanded, with the help of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, #ageoftheselfie. With these platforms, there has been a constant demand to share our identities and our self-worth. I consider to be an open vessel in my work and ask the question of what place does “self-love” have in this political climate and institutional structure. I want to shape new work around these kind of questions.

Recently, I have been living in outside of the United States. Working abroad has offered me a unique of awareness of black female identity and where I exist inside of it. The goal is to continue to expand my perceptions of identity. For places that I have been living in that are mostly predominantly white, it has a huge recognition and respect for the work has been presented by people of color from the United States. I use these places as my audience to find a medium and to understand the response of racial identity. This platform is to reflect on current perceptions, opinions, and responses inside my latest work, in an international context.
