Jamie Crewe

Jamie Crewe is an artist, a Spartan Woman, and a beautiful bronze figure with a polished cocotte’s head.

My work is based around research, and hysterical reaction to it. I work with objects, video, text, publication, print and drawing, using techniques that range from viscerally amateurish to highly refined. With these I refer to historical sources to make works which inform each other in ambiguous ways. This often manifests as confrontations between disparate references: between filmmaker James Bidgood and the myth of Adonis; between Luce Irigaray’s Speculum of the Other Woman (1974) and homoerotic photography; or between the anonymous pornographic novel Teleny (1893) and Pasolini’s Medea (1969). The connections made between these sources can be capricious, or focused around small shared details, but in the work they are expanded into nuanced, thoughtful forms.
