Tim Sandys

Bio

Tim is based in Glasgow. From a background in psychology and healthcare, his earliest works were inspired by his early experiences as a stage technician for the MacRobert Arts Centre painting backcloths for stage productions, designing sets and lighting. After moving to Scotland's capital, he worked for the National Museum's digital archive, restoring and enhancing digitised artwork and historical material. Continuously painting and drawing, he returned to full time-education to study fine art at Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, graduating with several awards for academic excellence, drawing and sculpture. Currently, Tim has a busy schedule of exhibitions including recent shows in Edinburgh, Philadelphia and New York.

Statement

Tim's practice involves itself in the trappings of societal norms and civilian infrastructure. His work investigates the negation of the status of the individual functioning within a societal context, using actions, interventions, drawings, photography and sculpture to identify and exploit points of strain. These include the covert photography of rail passengers, the distribution of over £300,000 of counterfeit currency, the secreting of mechanistic forms in tunnels and the construction of novel devices for blocking stairways, derailing trains and downing civilian aircraft.
