James Hutchinson

Statement

James's work seeks to analyse the social, economic and political forces and structures it finds itself subjected to, sometimes offering a critique, and sometimes simply seeking to describe. Over the last five years, it has grown from a curatorial practice into one that produces, commissions and assembles objects, offering an expansive approach to addressing the questions to which it owes its existence.

Bio

James was born in Southport in 1976, and received his BA(Hons) in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2000. Prior to moving to Glasgow, he was co-Director of the self-initiated curatorial practice The Salford Restoration Office, an organisation established in 2006 to explore and critique the visual arts infrastructure of Manchester. Through the production of projects and exhibitions, The Salford Restoration Office allowed museums and galleries to analyse their particular position and history within the ecology of the city. Previous to that, James worked independently as an artist and curator, was a Local Director of the artist run space floating ip, was Exhibitions Organiser at Cornerhouse and was on the editorial board of the magazine The Internationaler.
